Self Dental Care – Healing My Mouth

As though I don’t have enough on my plate healing my gut and healing myself spiritually, emotionally and mentally, I’ve added dental healing to the mix.

One of my back teeth became sensitive to hot and cold foods and has a little chip in it. The tooth’s gums have receded beneath the bottom of the tooth, and there’s a swollen pocket there. Food has been getting stuck in my teeth and gums something awful. After 15 years, it was time for a dentist appointment. I wasn’t scared of the dentist. I always had healthy teeth. I had my first cavity when I was 20. I never had issues with my wisdom teeth, and I didn’t need braces. I didn’t understand why everyone was so scared of the dentist.

I let some time pass. The tooth wasn’t sensitive to temperature anymore, and I wanted to save up some more money for the appointment. Weeks later I felt sensitivity at my jaw beneath the tooth. It was time to make that appointment. I started reading about receding gums and Periodontal Disease. I read that receding gums will never grow back, and that all you can do is have a piece of your gums surgically removed from one area and moved to the area where it was receding. Now I was scared. I’ve never had surgery in my life. I didn’t want to get anaestesia and any other drugs they wanted to give me. I’ve been working too hard at detox, and I haven’t even taken any over the counter pain killers! This was going to cost a lot of money I didn’t have. How would I find a good dentist who was nurturing and caring? I’m very picky about who I’ll trust with my health. I have anxiety about anything health related, and this was really bothering me. Infected gums?!

I sat with it for a little bit and googled “natural dentist Asheville” just for the hell of it and found a Holistic Dentist. Now I was more comfortable. But I was blown away by the price and still feeling anxious about having a health problem.

My friends encouraged me, “Are you sure it’s impossible to grow back receding gums?” I had seen things like “How to heal cavities naturally” online, so I decided not to give up. This is the same thing that happened when I had eczema all over my whole body. I just had to take charge and do the research. I spent hours and hours researching, and I found a wealth of encouraging information. In fact, healing your teeth and gums seemed pretty simple. There were stories of people with severely damaged and infected gums who saw an improvement just days after they started, and  complete healing after some time.

I felt so relieved, and I was baffled that I’ve spent all this time healing my gut, healing my mind, healing my heart, and I completely neglected my mouth. I had no clue about taking care of my mouth. Brushing my teeth with a natural, fluoride free toothpaste from the health food store and a newly acquired Waterpik was the extent of it. This was a whole new world of information. I learned that not surprisingly, poor diet, namely sugar is the main cause of cavities and unhealthy gums. Thankfully, I already have that step toward healing my dental problems underway.

I learned about oil pulling, an ancient practice of swishing a spoonful of coconut oil in your mouth for twenty minutes. As the oil moves between your teeth and gums it pulls out toxins and bacteria like a magnet. I added neem oil, eucalyptus oil and clove oil to the mixture.

Next, I learned about real toothpaste, and that I’ve been brushing my teeth with useless crap. I found a toothpaste recipe and made my own concoction. I used coconut oil, baking soda, a little bentonite clay, eucalyptus, clove and neem essential oils, because those are the oils I had on hand.

Lastly, I ordered Dr. Schulze’s Tooth and Gum Formula. There were many recommendations to use Dr. Schillington’s formula, but Dr. Schulze’s formula had the exact same ingredients and was $8 cheaper for the same amount. Plus I got free shipping.

So now I have a plan. Oil pulling in the morning before consuming any food followed by brushing with my new homemade toothpaste. I use my Waterpik and brush my teeth more gently than I had been after I eat anything.

After the first oil pull, I could really feel a difference. My gums felt tighter, and my teeth have never felt so clean in my life.

I’m waiting for the arrival of my Tooth and Gum Formula, and am really looking forward to seeing big results after the results I experience from just the small amount of essential oils I use for oil pulling and in my toothpaste. I feel excited for a new healing journey. Careful dental care will always be part of my life now. I feel empowered and hopeful.

We’re so fortunate to live in a time in which all of humanity’s collected knowledge is at our fingertips. Self care would have been nearly impossible 20 years ago. There’s such a wealth of information online about healing. The information is spreading like wildfire with everyone having the ability to share their experiences, knowledge and techniques.

I know that my body is intelligent beyond my understanding, and my goal is to nourish it and assist it in its healing, never to impede with unnatural, harmful practices like surgery and unnatural medications. I’ve experienced great things from essential oils and herbs, healthy foods and a healthy mindstate.

  1. This is exactly why I keep putting off my trip to the dentist. The last time I went I was told that I also have receding gums and would need surgery. I freaked out and never went back! Thanks for the great information on alternative dentistry.
